Our Story
Economy Tackle began in 1948 as a watersports store, inside an old WWII army barracks (seen in adjacent photo). Additions have been made over the years, but the barracks remain as the heart of the structure, and fishing/tackle as the heart of the store.
New beginnings
In 1959, it was purchased by Roy Goodwin and the Goodwin family. Roy built additions to the barracks in 1965 (adjacent photo), creating a more open and inviting atmosphere with large windows to showcase the products. Roy was a passionate fisherman, devoted father, and dedicated businessman. He treated every customer and employee like family. A hard worker, through and through, Roy rarely missed a day (except maybe to fish) — a trait passed down to his son, Mark, who eventually took over the business.
our evolution
As industry, market and demographics of Sarasota changed, Economy Tackle held a variety of outdoor gear to compliment and help its tackle business grow. They have sold camping gear, small crafts, canoes and even shuffle-board equipment. In 1989 Economy Tackle joined forces with Dolphin Dive, selling diving and snorkeling gear. The shuffle-board gear and snorkeling gear are still being offered but Dolphin Dive has since transitioned to Dolphin Paddlesports. Realizing that kayaks, kayak fishing and stand-up paddle boarding were becoming a popular sport, the company took on many new and innovative kayak brands, including the now famous Hobie Mirage pedal-drive kayaks and the lightweight Hurricane Kayaks.
Since its opening, Economy Tackle/Dolphin Paddlesports has grown into the number one shop for fishing and tackle gear and has offered a fine line of recreational and fishing
